One important rule of thumb tree service Dallas always keep in mind is that you never want to prolong your trees during its blooming season. Many trees bloom at different times so it's important to do research on it before taking on this important task. |
IMPORTANT TIPS TO TRIMMING YOUR TREES IN SEASON
When pruning the tree, it's important to always start evaluating what branches need to be cut from the top of the ridge. This Ridge line is called the crown and gives the tree it's beauty Luster and fullness.
Trees that are very condensed can be trimmed back to open them up and make open areas within the crown itself. Choosing the right limbs or branches to be cut down is very important, one bad cut could leave your tree mangled and an eyesore for your property. When choosing branches try to start off by choosing ones from the top and work your way down. Try to isolate the ones that are either dying, diseased or have a sick look to them. Whenever making the choice on which branches or limbs to be cut keep in mind some very basic rules. 1. Never prune more than one fourth of the trees crown in one session. 2. A good rule of thumb is to pick branches that are one third smaller in diameter to the tree trunk. 3. Make sure you do not cut more than one third of the trees total height. 4. You should try your very best to even out the cuts so the crown does not look deformed or an equal amount on both sides. |
Crown lifting involves removing the lower part of the branches that are in the trees crowns. This is done for several reasons; one being simply a cosmetic look, a way to make room for overhanging branches, and to help the trees overall health by balancing out the weight of the crown.
Please keep in mind the trees eat through their leaves and you should never remove more than 30% of the trees overall leaves at one time. This could have an effect where the tree will not get enough nutrients and sustain itself in the next season. Removing the lower branches which is called crown lifting will give a great appearance to your trees. Try your best to pick branches that are a third in diameter compared to the Main Stem. In most cases the lower branches will absolutely be thicker so the wound will be larger, subject to disease in that same season. It is important when doing tree trimming that you try your best to do it during late winter months. This will avoid some of the bugs and beetles that contribute to tree disease. Make absolutely sure that you stay away from areas like the bark ridge and the collar. |
Crown thinning is probably one the most important things you can do for your trees longevity and lifespan.
This is where you select thinner branches from the top of the trees crown and work your way down to the bottom of the base. This branch selection allows you to open up the crown more so you have proper ventilation during storms or High winds. This is essentially important especially in North Texas, because, during the spring season the wind can blow up to 80 miles per hour. This will prevent your tree branches from breaking and allow the stronger ones to be able to grow and blossom throughout the trees life span. Once again tree crown thinning is to open the crown to have more airflow and to reduce the crown's density and prevent tree damage during storms. This is also a great cosmetic look for your trees, allowing them not to look too full and more natural. |
Crown reduction is also important for trees that have too much over growth. The strategy behind crown reduction is simple, to cut back from the top to the bottom some of the overgrown smaller branches in addition to some of the larger branches.
This technique should only be used if the tree has reached an overgrowth proportion and used as a last resort. Only a trained tree surgeon or arborist should be contracted for this type of work. Seeing that you will probably cut back every branch on the tree and reshape the crown itself. Make sure when contracting someone they have a ANSI A300 license from the I SA international Society of Arbor care. This will ensure you that they know exactly how to properly preform the crown reduction on your trees. It is not recommended for Tree owners without the proper training to take on such a task because trees never heal, they seal and one bad cut can deform your tree for that trees lifespan. In most cases your tree surgeon or arborist will recommend a third of the tree to have crown reduction. |
Pollarding is often a mis used practice and should only be used on younger trees that are in their growth process.
This is a technique where all the branches and limbs are cut back to the knuckles this process is done in intervals not all at once. Normally during a six month frame you will have cut back until you reach the desired location where the knuckles are. Younger, tender branches will start to grow back, the process is repeated again the following year. The reasoning behind this, especially In willow trees, is to get tender branches that are not thick in diameter, causing the branches then to bend over easily with wind where you get the Willow effect. This technique should not be used on some species! Call Tree Service Dallas certified arborist to give you all the information you need to know about pollarding. |

What this means is that our technicians are certified with the international Society of Arbor care in the art and craft of tree trimming.
We take great pride in the fact that our technicians have their certification before doing any tree trimming jobs on your property. For those do it yourselves people; it's imperative as you can see from the picture to the left, that you stay away from trimming any of the main stream branches. You want to identify branches that are three quarters, 1/3 the size in diameter of the tree trunk for selection process on your trimming. This is imperative to the over all trees growth and health and life span longevity. Cutting off one of the mainstream branches will deform your tree and force it to grow in an improper manner. Try to select branches that are smaller on the mainstream branches themselves, this will allow you to open up the crown for proper growth action and also from storm seeds in future. Allowing the winds to blow through your tree with more ease, not creating damage to your tree in the future. Remember, always start from the top and work your way down to the bottom of the base. Stay away from cutting important parts like the bark ridge, which is located on the top of the branch and next to the main trunk or the feed of the tree. Also avoid cutting the collar which is the bottom of the branch that can be next to the mainstream of the tree. These two areas do not heal properly and will cause your tree to seal incorrectly. |
